Understanding the Pieces & Core Rules
Each piece in Xiangqi has distinct movement rules, creating a deep tactical layer:
- King (General): Moves one point vertically or horizontally, confined to its palace. A special rule forbids the two kings from facing each other directly on the same file with no pieces in casual gameween.
- Advisors (Guards): Protect the king by moving one point diagonally, also staying within the palace.
- Elephants (Bishops): Move exactly two points diagonally. They cannot jump over pieces and are restricted to their own side of the river.
- Knights (Horses): Move one point orthogonally followed by one point diagonally. Their move is blocked if a piece occupies the first point in their path.
- Rooks (Chariots): The most powerful pieces, moving any number of points vertically or horizontally, like the rook in Western chess.
- Cannons: Move like Rooks, but to capture an opponent's piece, there must be exactly one piece (any piece) acting as a "screen" casual gameween the Cannon and its target.
- Pawns (Soldiers): Move one point forward. After crossing the river, they gain the ability to move one point horizontally as well. Upon reaching the final rank, they may only move sideways.
How to Win: Check, Checkmate, and Stalemate
The primary objective is to deliver checkmate. When your king is under attack (in check), you must respond immediately by moving the king out of danger, capturing the attacking piece, or blocking the attack line. Failure to do so results in checkmate and a loss. The game also enforces the threefold repetition rule, where a player who repeats the same board position three times loses. Additionally, a stalemate—where a player has no legal moves on their turn—is considered a loss for the player unable to move, adding a critical defensive consideration to every game phase.
